Brief:

Design the editorial illustration for The New York Times Book Review, based on the novel “You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty” by Akwaeke Emenzi, in which a young widow stumbles into new life and romance while grieving for her past love.

Solution:

I worked using both Photoshop and Illustrator to create three draft sketches interpreting this brief from different points of view. I then connected with the Art Director to select the piece that conveyed the main idea of the article most clearly, and used the feedback given to guide the final piece. This has resulted in a powerful, and on-topic editorial illustration to rouse reader interest, therefore positively driving traffic to the book in review.
